When Oliver Twist asked for more gruel, he was making a quintessential Bold Move, but it wasn’t only the courage involved that made it so. It was the fact that his courageous action came from a very real, personal need he had that was aligned to the core value of receiving sufficient nourishment. It is true, that he and his companions had drawn straws to see who would be the one to ask, but if he had acted simply because he drew the long straw, his action would have been more on the order of a Brash Move, one made because of outside influences. Oliver’s request for more came right from his gut!
Oliver’s Bold Move ended up completely changing his life as Bold Moves always do. It led him through a series of events that ultimately brought into his life, the two things he wished for most, love and acceptance. Along the way, he accessed other values that were authentic to him like honesty, trust and family.
